Water Polo Splits a Pair of Matches on First Day of West Coast Swing

Riverside, Calif. - The Fordham water polo team began their four-day west coast road trip on Thursday with two matches, the first of which was a scorer's dream and goalkeeper's nightmare, as the Rams won a shootout over Mt. St. Antonio College, 21-18.

Fordham led by a 10-3 score after the first quarter, and 14-7 at the break. Mt St. Antonio did put together a surge in the second half, but the Rams were able to hold off the comeback.

Five Rams finished with multi-goal games, led by Patrick Lenihan, who had a season-high five goals, while Andrew Gonzalez netted four markers. Bobby Wurtz and Ben Clinkinbeard each had three tallies with Nicholas Allen having two. Other Fordham goal scorers included Alex Judge, Willie Leach, Peter Bergum, and Dan Kearney.

In goal, Noah LeBeau made six saves in the first half, while Patrick Harrigan (2 saves) and Eric Mullery (1 save) split the duties in the second half.

In their second match, the Rams fell to Cal-Baptist by a score of 20-7.

CBU led by three goals, 4-1, after the first period, and built the lead to 12-4 by the end of the third quarter.

Kearney was the only Ram with multiple goals, as he scored twice. Wurtz, Gonzalez, Allen, Daniel Barron, and Davis DeFontes each had one goal.

LeBeau recorded 11 saves in three quarter of work in net, while Harrigan hadone save in the final quarter of play.

The Rams continue their road trip on Friday, as they participate in the 2012 Gary Troyer Tournament in Claremont, California. Fordham will take on Redlands at 3:40 PM on Friday, followed by a 7:40 PM match against LaVerne.
