Oct. 21, 2012

Brooklyn, N.Y. - For the second straight match, the Fordham water polo team went toe-to-toe with their opponent late into the second half with an opportunity at an upset. However with the score at 12-11, the 14th-ranked St. Francis College Terriers netted eight consecutive goals to close out a 20-11 victory over the Rams in Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon.

St. Francis' Marko Gencic found the back of the net seven times to lead the Terriers' attack. St. Francis jumped out to a 6-3 advantage at the end of the opening quarter after falling behind 2-1 in the opening minutes on Fordham goals from Patrick Lenihan and Nicholas Allen. Gencic scored three of four goals during a 4-0 run for the hosts, and Matthew Varela added the other.

Fordham trimmed the deficit to 8-7 with 4:14 remaining in the half after three straight goals, two by Bobby Wurtz and the other by Davis DeFontes. But the hosts scored three of the final four goals of the period to grab an 11-8 lead at the break.

The Rams gave the Terriers a scare in the third quarter as they closed within 12-11 after a penalty shot by Wurtz with 2:27 remaining in the frame.

The Terriers would get some breathing room as Gencic and Toth scored in the final minute to give St. Francis a 14-11 lead after three quarters.

The Terriers owned the final quarter, outscoring the Rams by a 6-0 margin. Vuk Vujosevic scored three of his four goals in the final stanza.

Luka Raic played three quarters and made three saves for the Terriers while Noah LeBeau made five stops for the Rams. Offensively, Fordham got three goals from both Wurtz and Allen, while DeFontes had two goals. Mike Hay and Dan Kearney rounded out the Fordham scoring.

The Fordham water polo team will conclude its regular season on Wednesday night, when the Rams host the Iona College Gaels at 7:30 PM.
