The Fordham University women's tennis team opened play at the 2012 USTA/ITA Division I Women's Northeast Regional Championships at the U.S. Military Academy on Friday.
In the open qualifiers, Bella Genkina advanced to the round of 64 with a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 win over Kathleen Uy from Rhode Island but fell to FDU's Egzona Morina, 6-3, 6-1.
In other qualifier action, Angelika Dabu fell to Delaware's Dorothy Safron, taking the first set, 6-3, but dropping the second, 6-1, and the third, 6-4.
In doubles action, the team of Anika Novacek and Amy Simidian fell to Columbia's Lauren Stratman and Kapika Vaidya, 8-4, and Genkina and Sarah Ali were upended by Harvard's Sylvia Li and Amanda Lin, 8-3.
The tournament continues on Saturday, October 20, as Simidian will face Cornell's Christine Ordway in the round of 32 of the main singles draw.
