The Fordham men's tennis team kept its perfect fall record intact on Saturday, as the Rams posted a 6-1 victory over Saint Peter's and a 7-0 win over Hartford. The two wins put Fordham's fall record at 4-0.
"I am very pleased with the victories today. I challenged the guys after the first match this morning to come out and show me how much energy they could play with. We definitely did better with doubleheader today and finished stronger," said head coach Cory Hubbard.
In both matches this afternoon, the Rams opened each match with a sweep of the doubles action. Mischa Koran and Emilio Mora won both of their #1 doubles matches, 8-1, while the #2 doubles tandem of Kuba Kowalski and Srikar Alla won 8-1 against Saint Peter's and 8-2 against Hartford. The #3 doubles team of Max Peara and J.J. Tauil won both of their matches by a score of 8-2.
"We came out in doubles in both matches and really set the tone and gave them no chances to get in to the match. Our doubles is getting stronger, as my guys are starting to buy into my tactics and how I want us to play doubles," said Hubbard.
In singles action, Fordham won five of six matches against the Peacocks, while winning all six versus the Hawks. The best match of the day came from Kowalski in the #1 slot against Saint Peter's Carlos Carrera. Kowalski lost the first set, but battled his way back with 6-2 and 6-3 wins in the second and third set to win his match in come-from-behind fashion.
Alla, Mora, and Jan Krouham joined Kowalski with back-to-back singles wins on Saturday, with Tauil, Michael Puntillo, and Alex DeRienzo each posting one singles' win.
"Each guy on the team has done well this fall, but Emilio has really stood out in singles and doubles. He brings a great energy on the court, and his experience coming from a top 20 program has really helped show the other guys what it takes to get where we want to go," said Hubbard.
The Fordham men's tennis team will next be in action at the ITA Regionals, October 17-21, in New Haven, Connecticut.
