Women's Soccer Showdown With Charlotte Set For Friday Night

Oct. 11, 2012

Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham women's soccer team is back at home this weekend, as the team hits the midway point of conference play against the Charlotte 49ers on Friday night. The Rams hope to put last week's losses in Richmond behind them, as Fordham still sits in the middle of the pack of the Atlantic 10 standings. Atop those standings, Charlotte is 3-0-0 and enters the contest on a five-match win streak.

SERIES HISTORY: This is the ninth all-time meeting between the Rams and the 49ers, with Charlotte holding a decisive advantage. The 49ers are 6-1-1 against the Rams, with Fordham's only win coming at the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship tournament.

LAST TIME OUT: The Fordham women's soccer team looked to quickly put their last match against VCU in the rear view mirror, as the Rams took on the Richmond Spiders on Sunday. Fordham was aggressive from the start, but an unfortunate bounce on a Richmond shot put the ball into the net, giving Richmond a 1-0 win.

Fordham controlled the early stages of the game, as the Rams forced Richmond goalkeeper Andrea Young to make four saves over the first 20 minutes of the contest. The defenses held up strongly, accounting for a number of blocked shots and a scoreless first half.

The Rams continue to press in the second half as Annie Worden almost gave the Rams the lead in the 71st minute. Worden would put a shot off the post and then had her rebound shot blocked, keeping the game without a goal.

The game would come down to one bad bounce in the 83rd minute. Richmond's Erin Layne had a shot blocked with Fordham trying to clear on a header. The ball though bounced the wrong way and into the net for an own goal.

The Rams desperately tried to find the equalizer in the final seven minutes, but shots by Worden and Kaitlin Abrams were both stopped by Young to preserve the 1-0 victory.

BALANCED SCORING: This season, a total of eight players have scored for the Rams this season, with only three of those players having more than one goal. Those players include sophomore Kristina Maksuti (4), and captains Annie Worden (2) and Kaitlin Abrams (2).

WHO'S NEXT: The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, October 14th, when the Rams take on George Washington at 1:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field.
