Springfield, Mass. -

On the way to the Thursday's Atlantic 10 opener at Massachusetts, the Fordham University men's basketball squad stopped off for an afternoon at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield where the Rams got a history lesson and brushed up a little on their game.

The Rams toured the Hall of Fame and discovered that one person with a Fordham connection is enshrined in the Hall (Harry Fisher, head coach of the 1904-05 team) and two other with Fordham connections have been honored with the Curt Gowdy Media Award (former Sports Information Director Jim O'Connell and Malcom Moran, FCRH '75).

Besides the history lesson, the Rams also had plenty of time to work on their games on the Hall of Fame court, including a dunking demonstration on the Hall's rims.

The Fordham University Rams open their 2012 Atlantic 10 season by traveling up to Amherst, Massachusetts, to face the University of Massachusetts Minutemen in the Mullions Center on Thursday, January 5th, at 7:00 p.m. The game can be heard live on WFUV (90.7 FM) and on wfuv.org. The Rams enter the game with a 7-6 overall record after defeating #22/21 Harvard University, 60-54, in the Rose Hill Gym on Tuesday night. Massachusetts enters its A-10 opener with an 11-3 overall record after defeating Central Connecticut State, 97-65, last Friday on Amherst.

On the court, Fordham is led by junior Chris Gaston, who leads the team in scoring (16.8 ppg) and rebounding (11.2 rpg). He scored 18 points and grabbed ten rebounds against Harvard, his NCAA-leading eleventh double-double of the year and the 47th of his career. Gaston's 18 points brings his career total to 1,168, placing him in 21st place on the Fordham all-time scoring list while his ten rebounds bring his career total to 780, good for eighth place on the Fordham career rebounding list.

Thursday's game will be the 37th meeting between the Rams and the Minutemen on the hardwood. Massachusetts leads the all-time series, which started in 1967, 24-12, but Fordham took last year's meeting, 77-73, in the Rose Hill Gym in the regular season finale.
