The Fordham women's tennis team opened its spring semester of play on Saturday night with a 5-2 victory over the Fairfield Stags at the Stamford Indoor Courts in Stamford, Connecticut. The win keeps Fordham unbeaten in dual match play this season at 5-0.
The Rams opened the match strong by sweeping all three doubles matches. Fordham's Amy Simidian and Angelika Dabu ousted Fairfield's Sharissa Ryan and Monica Yajima at first doubles, 8-4, while Bella Genkina and Sarah Ali topped Allison Radde and Victoria Pirrello by an 8-6 score for Fordham's second win. Hanna Fritzinger and Julie Leong finished the Fordham sweep with an 8-1 win over Nikki Jackson and Emma Samson at third doubles.
In singles play, the Rams got win at third through sixth singles to capture the match by a 5-2 count. All four wins were in straight sets.
Fordham's Dabu topped Radde at third singles, 6-1, 6-3, while Genkina defeated Pirrello, 6-2, 6-3, at fourth singles. Leong (5th singles - 6-2, 6-2) and Fritzinger (6th singles - 6-1, 6-0) rounded out the Fordham singles wins.
Ali almost made it five singles wins, knotting her match at one set all with Ryan at second singles. However, Ryan won the super tie-breaker, 10-3, to earn the point for the Stags.
The Fordham women's tennis team will next be in action on Saturday, February 4th, when the team play at Albany, beginning at 1:00 PM.
