The Fordham men's tennis team returned to dual match competition on Saturday, as the Rams traveled downtown to face the Columbia Lions at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center. The Rams' unbeaten streak in dual matches this season came to an abrupt end, as the Lions posted a 7-0 victory.
The match began with doubles play, as the Lions swept all three matches. Haig Schneiderman and Winston Lin of Columbia topped Mischa Koran and Kuba Kowalski at #1 doubles by an 8-5 score, while Max Schnur and Ashok Narayana topped Srikar Alla and Peder Gram at #2 doubles, 8-4.
Nathaniel Grey and John Yetimoglu completed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win over Michael Puntillo and J.J. Tauil at third doubles.
In singles play, Columbia won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, while Kowalski was able to force a three-set match for Fordham at the #1 slot. Schneiderman took the opening set, 7-5, but Kowalski battled back to take the second set, 6-2. Schneiderman however recovered in set three to defeat Kowalski, 7-5.
Other tight matches came at third and fourth singles. Columbia's Grey defeated Fordham's Alla, 6-3, 6-4, at third singles, while Narayana topped Tauil, 7-5, 6-2.
The Fordham men's tennis team will next be in action on Thursday, February 9th, when the Rams play at NJIT in Newark, New Jersey, beginning at 6:00 PM.
