Bronx, N.Y. -
The Fordham University football program suffered a great loss last week with the passing of Laurence Brauer, a 1966 football team captain, on Friday in Princeton, N.J. He was 66.
"Larry Brauer was a tremendous Fordham football man who helped the club teams in the 1960's to be successful and that led to our football program being where it is today," said Executive Director of Athletics, Frank McLaughlin. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family for their loss."
Brauer, GSB '67, was a mainstay with the Fordham club teams of the 1960's, serving as a team captain in 1966. He was also a member of the 1965 Rams' squad that finished the year ranked number one in the country.
When Fordham teammate Thomas Keaveney, FCRH `67, was honored with the Walsh Award at the annual Fordham Gridiron Club Dinner in 2010, he read a note that was given to him by Brauer. In the note, Brauer emphasized how much the club team meant to the students in the 1960's and how 15,000 people turned out for the first club game at Fordham in 1964 when the Rams hosted NYU.
Brauer attended Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx where he was an honorable mention All-City pick with the football team before enrolling at Fordham University, turning down offers from Villanova and Detroit. A tackle, he was nicknamed "The Bear" by the Rams, earning three letters with the squad while leading the Fordham line.
Brauer is survived by his wife, Catherine (Kay) and son, Brian, along with brothers, Chris, Matthew, and Paul Brauer, and sisters, Kathleen Reilly, Lynne McGowan, and Margaret Andermanis.
A Requiem Mass will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at 10 a.m. at St. David the King RC Church, 1 Village Rd., Princeton Junction, NJ (directions). Viewing is on Tuesday, September 6th from 6-9 p.m. at the Kimble Funeral Home, 1 Hamilton Ave., Princeton NJ (directions).
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory be made to Fordham University Football, Office of Athletic Development, 888 Seventh Ave., New York, NY, 10019.
