The Fordham men's golf team is heading upstate, to Ithaca, New York, this weekend to compete in the Cornell Invitational golf tournament, hosted by Cornell University at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. In just the second competition of the fall season, the squad is looking to improve upon its ninth place finish from the Bucknell Fall Invitational last week. The event is scheduled to have 36 holes played on Saturday, September 24, with the final round coming on Sunday the 25th.
It has been a season of superlatives so far for the men's golf team, as they side saw three players set new career-bests in what was just the first tournament of the season last week. Senior captain, Devon O'Rourke shot a one-under-par 69 on the second round of play. Junior Brody Nieporte posted a collegiate-low score of 70 in the opening 18 holes. and Pat Herlihy, a classmate of Nieporte's, set a career mark with a 74 on Friday.
The Rams competed in this same Cornell Invitational in 2010 and finished in 10th position out of 14 teams. In that competition, Jason Del Rosso led the Rams with a three-round total of 228, good for 34th position. O'Rourke, Nieporte, Connor Monaghan and Ryan Donahue were the other golfers for Fordham.
Following the Cornell Invitational, the team will travel to New Haven, Connecticut to compete in the Yale McDonald Cup beginning on October 1. The host school is Yale University.
