Women's Tennis opens Plays at Stony Brook Invitational

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Fordham University women's tennis squad opened its 2011 fall season at the Stony Brook Invitational on Friday with five Rams advancing to singles quarterfinals action.

In the A singles, Amy Simidian upended Navy's Darien Sears in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals while Sarah Ali fell to Jamila Paul of Army, 6-1, 6-1.

In the B singles, Angelika Dabu bested FDU's Irina Dementyeva, 7-6 and 6-0, to advance while Hanna Fritzinger lost to Salome Mkervalidze of Stony Brook, 7-1 and 7-5.

Bella Genkina advanced to the quarterfinals in the C singles by defeating Stony Brook's Chloe Pike, dropping the first set 6-2 before winning the second, 6-3, and the tiebreaker, 10-4. Bethany Boyle also competed in the C singles, falling to FDU's Eqzona Morina, 6-1 and 7-5.

The D singles action saw two Rams advance to the quarterfinals with Sarah Tremaine upending Rhode Island's Karolina Wojciak, 7-6 and 6-3, and Julie Leong besting Bryant's Kate McCabe.

In doubles play, Simidian and Sarah Ali defeated Rhode Island's Pam Emery and Kathleen Uy in the first round of the A doubles, 8-4, and then beat Navy's Stefanie Ton and Emani Decquir (Navy), 8-2, to advance to the quarterfinals.

Also in the A double competition, Genkina and Dabu won over Bryant's Stephanie Smyers and Marcela Brandao, 8-4, before falling to Elmine Botes and Irina Dementyeva from FDU, 8-5

In B doubles, Fritzinger and Tremaine upended Natalie Houle and Oban from Navy, 8-3, but then lost to Rhode Island's Karolina Wojciak and Nithila Asokaraj, 8-1.

Boyle/Taylor Holt also competed in the B doubles, falling to Stony Brook's Nini Lagvilava and Polina Movchan.

Play continues at the Stony Brook Invitational on Saturday with Simidian taking on FDU's Elmine Botes in the A singles quarterfinals, Dabu facing Navy's Abby Shewalter in the B singles quarterfinals, Genkina playing Army's Elle Taylor in the C singles Genkina plays Elle Taylor (Army) in quarters and Tremaine facing Navy's Caitlin Olsen and Leong taking on Rhode Island's Nithila Asokaraj in D singles quarterfinals.

In doubles action, Simidian and Ali will play FDU's Julia Prantl and Egzona Morina in the semifinals of the A doubles action.
