Loudonville, N.Y. -
The Fordham men's tennis team opened their fall season with a bang on Saturday, posting a 7-0 victory over Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. The new look Rams featured six new players, winning each singles match in straight sets.
"I was very impressed with the energy and focus our guys played with. We had a lot of players making their college debuts, so you never know how much nerves could be a factor. But the guys came out from the first point and set the tone and never let up until the match was finished," said head coach Cory Hubbard after the match.
The Rams opened the match with a clean sweep of the Saints in doubles play. Fordham's Kuba Kowalski and Srikar Alla posted an 8-0 shutout at first doubles over Siena's Dylan Roberts and Peter Collins, while Mischa Koran and Peder Gram earned an 8-3 win at second doubles over Alex Burbine and Jarrett Siwiec.
J.J. Tauil and Jan Krouham completed the Fordham sweep of doubles' action with an 8-4 win over Matthew Funiciello and Eric Summanaru.
In singles' action, the Rams put together a dominating performance, led by Kowalski, Koran, and Tauil. Each player won their match at first, third, and fifth singles, respectively, by a score of 6-1 and 6-0.
Alla defeated Collins at second singles, 6-2, 6-1, with Gram taking home a fourth singles win over Siwiec, 6-2 and 6-0. The closest match of the afternoon was at sixth singles, where Krouham defeated Darren Reich, 6-3 and 6-4.
"It's nice to win first match of season, but tomorrow will be a bigger challenge as we have a doubleheader at home. It will be a good test to see where we're at, as we lost to these teams last year. It's Alumni Day so we are hoping for a big crowd and look forward to playing at home and establishing a true home court atmosphere," said Hubbard.
The Fordham men's tennis team will next be in action on Sunday, September 18th, when the Rams host a home doubleheader against St. Peter's College at 11:00 AM and St. Francis College at 3:00 PM
