Sept. 11, 2011

Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham women's soccer team looks to bounce back from Friday night's loss to Manhattan, as they take on the Stony Brook Seawolves at Jack Coffey Field. The Seawolves are 1-4 this season after a 2-1 overtime loss to Long Island University on Friday.

SERIES HISTORY: Fordham is 7-3-2 all-time against the Seawolves, but Stony Brook has won each of the last two match-ups in 2007 and 2008.

LAST TIME OUT: The Fordham University women's soccer team made its shortest trip of the year, venturing across the Bronx to take on Manhattan College in the annual Battle of the Bronx on Friday night. Only one goal was scored in the match and, unfortunately for the Rams, it was by the Jaspers as they pulled out a 1-0 win at Gaelic Park.

Devon Lutz netted the game's lone goal, winning a 50/50 ball from Fordham keeper Rachel Suther in the 63rd minute and burying the ball in the back of an open net. It was Lutz's first goal of the year.

Fordham controlled play over the first seven minutes, getting two shots on net, one from Katherine Wah and one from Annie Worden, but Manhattan keeper Kara Davis kept both shots out of the Jaspers' net.

In the ninth minute, Manhattan threatened, first on a shot from Lutz and, ten seconds later, on a Megan Lavecchia blast, with both shots being knocked away by Suther.

The Rams had opportunities for the tie in the final minutes but a Jessica Widmann shot was blocked in the 85th minute and a Kelsey Dougherty Howard scoring chance was turned aside by Davis in the 89th minute.

Suther finished with three saves in the Fordham net while Davis recorded eight for the Jaspers as the Rams outshot Manhattan 22-8.

MAKSUTI NAMED A-10 CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK (9/6): Fordham University freshman forward Kristina Maksuti was named Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Co-Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the conference. This is Maksuti's first career Atlantic 10 weekly honor.

In two games, Maksuti tallied five points last week, netting a pair of game-winning goals. She scored the game-winner in a 4-3 overtime comeback victory over Cornell on Friday, and then tallied the eventual game winner and an assist in a 3-1 win at Delaware State on Sunday.

Overall, Maksuti leads the team in scoring with four goals and two assists for 10 points in five games.

EARLY IMPACT: Just five games into her Fordham career, freshman Kristina Maksuti has proven herself to be a player that opposing team's always have to keep an eye on. She leads the team with 18 shots, 10 points, and four goals, which includes two game-winners and two at Seton Hall in the season opener. She is the first Fordham freshman to record a multi-goal game in her first career game.

Since 1999, Fordham has had six freshmen score in their first career goal in their first career game. The last was Katie Sanchez in 2005 against Iona. Other freshmen to score in their first game were Corey Dunfey, Lena Daragjati, and Katie Noon in 2002 against St. Peter's, and Beth Kitson and Erin Safarik in 1999 against St. John's.

Fellow freshmen Maria Lorena Canicatti and Megan Poiesz have also found the scoring column this season with Canicatti scoring a goal and an assist, while Poiesz netted her first career goal at Rutgers.
