Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham women's soccer team loaded with nine newcomers on the team took to Jack Coffey Field for the first time in 2011 on Saturday, taking on Iona in an exhibition contest. The Rams and Gaels played to a 1-1 draw for 90 minutes.

Fordham had the better of play in the first half, tallying a 5-1 shot advantage and scoring the only marker of the period.

Fordham's Mary Solimine took a free kick from the near side of the field, putting the ball into the box. Iona goalkeeper Trista Rivera attempted to punch the ball away, but the ball ended up in front of Fordham's Mariella Romano, who headed it into the net from seven yards out for a 1-0 Rams' lead at the 32:45 mark.

The Rams had a number of chances in the second half to increase their 1-0 lead, as junior Liz Ker, freshman Megan Poiesz, and freshman Kristina Maksuti all head point blank opportunities but were denied by Iona's second goalkeeper Jackie Gates.

Those efforts allowed Iona to remain only a goal down until the 89th minute, when Hunter Logan knocked in a pass from Natalie Murphy past Fordham goalkeeper Sarah Zieman to knot the game at one.

Fordham had one final chance to regain the lead, as Iona was called for a foul 25 yards from goal with 25 seconds left. Maksuti lined up the free kick, but the ball was eventually cleared away, leaving the game as a 1-1 draw.

In goal for the Rams, Rachel Suther played the first 65 minutes with Zieman finishing the game. Iona's goalkeepers, Rivera and Gates each played a half with Gates making nine saves in the second half. The Rams outshot Iona by a 13-3 count in the contest.

The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, August 21st, when the team opens regular season play at Seton Hall at 7:00 PM.
