As baseball reaches the dog days of summer, players with Fordham ties are hitting their strides with summer teams, while five former Rams are continuing their careers in minor league baseball. Here a quick recap of who's doing what and where.
NECBL
Rich Anastasi - Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide
Seeing the vast majority of his playing time as a reliever in the spring, Anastasi has made three starts in four appearances for the Raging Tide this summer. He is 0-2 with a 5.50 ERA in 18 innings pitched. His best performance thus far came on July 2nd against the North Shore Navigators, pitching seven inning of four-hit ball with four strikeouts.
Jonathan Reich - Sanford Mainers
Reich has seen limited action out of the Mainers bullpen, after a successful freshman campaign at Fordham. He has appeared in four games for Sanford, striking out six batters with just one walk in 6.1 innings of work.
ACBL
Tim Swatek - Southampton Breakers
Swatek has continued his dual threat status this summer, seeing action on the hill and in the outfield for Southampton. Swatek leads the Breakers with a .295 batting average (18-61) to go with four doubles and two RBI. On the hill, he has three saves and a 3.97 ERA in seven appearances. He also has 15 strikeouts to just three walks in 11.1 innings of work.
Chris Pike - Southampton Breakers
Pike joins Swatek on the Breakers' roster this summer, where he has actually been used more as a hitter than a pitcher. On the hill he has only appeared in one game, as he struck out four in two innings of relief. At the plate, Pike is 3-for-16 (.188) with an RBI.
Dan Sorine - Westhampton Aviators
Sorine is the final Ram seeing action as both a pitcher and a hitter this summer. At the plate, he is batting .263 (5-19) with two home runs and nine RBI, while on the mound he has made five appearances with three starts. He has totaled 13 strikeouts in 12.2 innings of work.
NYCBL
John Porter - Albany Dutchmen
Porter has made five relief appearances for the Dutchmen, posting a 3.86 ERA in seven innings of work with seven strikeouts.
MINOR LEAGUES
Cory Riordan - Tulsa Drillers (Colorado Rockies - Class AA Texas League)
After making the 40-man spring training roster for the Colorado Rockies, Riordan was returned to the Tulsa Drillers for a second season. He has been one of the Drillers starting pitchers throughout the year, starting 16 games, posting 65 strikeouts in 92.1 innings pitched.
Angelo Ponte - Ogden Raptors (Los Angeles Dodgers - Rookie Pioneer League)
After one game with the Arizona League Dodgers, Ponte was promoted to the Ogden Raptors last week to be one of three catchers on the squad. Thus far, he has played in one game for the Raptors, drawing a walk in his only plate appearance.
Max Krakowiak - Everett AquaSox (Seattle Mariners - Class A Short Season Northwest League)
The last of three Fordham draft picks in June, Krakowiak got his minor league career of to a great start with the Everett AquaSox on July 3rd. Krakowiak earned the win in his first career appearance, allowing one earned run in 2.1 innings of relief with two strikeouts.
Nick Martinez - AZL Rangers (Texas Rangers - Rookie Arizona League)
After making one appearance with the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League, Martinez decided to forgo his final season with Fordham, signing with the Rangers in mid-June. He was assigned to the AZL Rangers, where he has already had an impact on their pitching staff. Martinez has made three appearances for the Rangers, posting a 1-1 record with a 2.57 ERA in seven innings.
Mike Mobbs - Normal Cornbelters (Independent - Frontier League)
Mobbs has found his spot as an outfielder for the Normal Cornbelters of the Independent Frontier League. He has put up some strong numbers, batting .306 (22-72) in 24 games with four doubles, three home runs, and 15 RBI, helping the Cornbelters to third place in the Frontier League's West Division.
