Two Fordham freshmen wrapped up competition on the national stage on Friday as Sam Houston placed tenth in the decathlon and Anisa Arsenault finished eleventh in the 5000m at the 2011 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.

Arkansas' Kevin Lazas won the decathlon with a score of 8,016 points followed by Gunnar Nixon (unattached) with 7,748 and Kevin Nielsen (Revolution Express TC), who placed third with 6,887 points. Houston's final score of 6,348 was good for tenth, 50 points behind the ninth place finisher and 100 points shy of his school record set at the Atlantic 10 Championships in May.

Houston, who entered the second day of decathlon competition in sixth place, had his best showing on day two in the final event, the 1500m where he placed third overall in a season best time of 4:40.95. He also placed fifth in the discus with a season best toss of 36.62m (120" 1'), 12th in both the 110m hurdles (16.64) and the pole vault (3.45m - 11' 3") and 13th in the javelin (35.21m - 115' 6").

In the women's 5000m, Arsenault placed eleventh in a time of 17:38.47, the seventh collegiate runner to cross the line. Kayla Beattie (unattached) won the race in a time of 16:29.92 followed by Virginia Tech's Taylor Crosson (16:57.92) and Courtney Dobbs (16:58.69). Arsenault was just edged out by North Dakota's Heidi Peterson, who placed tenth just over a second in front of Arsenault (17:37.12).
