Track & Field Opens Competition at Atlantic 10 Championships

Charlotte, N.C. - Day one of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship is in the books at the Irwin L. Belk Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. The day saw Fordham score in four events, while having one Ram at the top of the decathlon scoreboard.

Through day one, Fordham sits in ninth place in the women's competition out of 12 teams with 11 points, while the men are tied for 10th out of 11 teams.

Fordham's scoring began with senior Pat Brown in the men's hammer throw, as he took eighth with a season-best throw of 160' 4".

Later in the day, the men's 4x800 relay, comprised of John Cosgrove, Ryan Polo, Brian Walter, and Brian Schmidt, earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors, by placing second in a season-best time of 7:27.35.

Hoping to score on Sunday in the men's competition, freshman Sam Houston leads the decathlon five events by 203 points with a score of 3,742 points, while senior Augustus Gleason is seventh with 3,004 points. Houston took first in the long jump (21' 10 ¼"), shot put (40' 3 ½"), and 400 meters (49.16), while being second in the high jump (6' 5 ½") and third in the 100 meters (11.49). Gleason was fourth in the shot put (36' 5"), tied for fifth in the high jump (5' 10 ½"), sixth in the 100 meters (11.99), and seventh in both the long jump (18' 8") and the 400 meters (53.53).

On the women's side, Fordham scored in two field events, as sophomore Courtnay Newman took third in the high jump, tying a season-best by clearing 5' 5". Junior Blair Hassell continued her strong work in the javelin throw, taking fourth overall with a distance of 126' 11".

Fordham did have season-best performances that didn't score, as Keegan Talty cleared a season-best height of 14' 3 ¼" in the pole vault to take tenth place, while Sherilyn Groeninger had her season-best time in the 100 meters, clocking in at 12.45 seconds, which was 14th overall.

The women's 4x800 relay also had a season-best performance, as Ashley Davis, Diane Bain, Kelly Connolly, and Kerri Gallagher finished tenth overall in 9:12.48.

Other performers on day one were: Averie Sheppard (12th - 15.46), Newman (18th - 16.19), and Darleen Eiermann (20th - 16.91) in the 100 meter hurdles; Titi Fagade (20th - 12.72) in the 100 meters; Elisabeth Warren (12th - 17' 0") in the long jump; Daniel Chediak (15th - 13' 3 ½") in the pole vault; and Brian Riley (10th - 9:20.28) and Rich Grandelli (16th - 9:42.49) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

Day two of the Atlantic 10 Championship will begin at 10:00 AM on Sunday.
