Three Fordham women's swimmers, Brienne Ryan, Courtney Collyer, and Megan McGorry, were each named to the Mid-Major All-American Team, as each earned Honorable Mention honors from CollegeSwimming.com, it was announced this week.
Mid-Major All-Americans are selected on the basis on their qualification for the 2011 NCAA Division I Championships. Honorable mention selections are swimmers who were entered with NCAA `B' standards, but not selected for the 2011 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.
Ryan earns Mid-Major All-American honors for the second straight season, after posting NCAA `B' times in the 100 and 200 backstroke events. She earned All-Atlantic 10 honors in six events and won the 200 backstroke event in an Atlantic 10 record time of 1:56.11. In addition to the 200 backstroke, Ryan also set new school marks in the 50 freestyle (23.36) and 100 backstroke (53.44) events. In just two seasons with the Rams, she has totaled 12 All-Atlantic 10 accolades at the Atlantic 10 Championship.
Collyer earns her first Mid-Major All-American honor, after posting an NCAA `B' time in the 200 butterfly event at the Atlantic 10 Championship, winning her third straight gold medal in the event in 2:00.19. In addition to her First Team All-Atlantic 10 spot in the 200 butterfly, she also earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in four other events, including the 400 individual medley, where she once again broke the school record in 4:21.04. Collyer also broke the school record in the 200 individual medley (2:03.06) and was a part of the record-setting 200 freestyle relay team (1:34.90). In three years at Fordham, she has captured 11 All-Atlantic 10 accolades and was the 2009 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year.
McGorry ends her senior season with her first Mid-Major All-American honor, after posting an NCAA `B' time of 4:50.05 in the 500 freestyle event at the Atlantic 10 Championship, earning Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors and setting a new school record. On top of the 500 freestyle record, she also set new school marks in the 1000 freestyle (10:07.25) and 1650 freestyle (16:43.96) and was also a Second Team All-League honoree as a part of the 800 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams. Following the season, McGorry was one of two Fordham swimmers to be named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team. After transferring to Fordham as a junior, she finished her career as a five-time All-Atlantic 10 selection.
The following conferences have been designated as Mid-Majors: America East, Atlantic 10, Colonial Athletic Association, Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mountain Pacific, Missouri Valley, Patriot, Sun Belt, Summit, and Western Athletic. Institutions are also eligible by awarding fewer than half of the maximum-allowable scholarships (seven for women, five for men).
