Bronx, N.Y. -
As the 2010-11 season begins to wind down, the Fordham University Athletic Department held its 77th annual Block F Awards Dinner at the Villa Barone Manor on May 4th to honor Fordham University's student-athletes for their accomplishments during the academic year.
Among those honored was Ahmed Haruna who was named the 2011 recipient of the Kiwanis Community Service Award.
Fordham Kiwanis is part of a worldwide service organization that is committed to improving the quality of life through volunteer action. The members of Fordham Kiwanis, comprised of university faculty, staff, and administrators, wish to recognize student-athletes who not only excel in academics and in their respective sports, but who are also committed to working in community service activities.
Haruna is a four-year member of the football team, who has served as a part of the Fordham Regional Educational Technology Center, a new university-run community learning center that aims to increase the tech savvy of families in the Bronx, while helping students further their education. He has also volunteered in tutoring other student athletes and is a founding member of EDGE, the Empowering Decisions & Gaining Excellence volunteer program, which is an after school program that preps students in the Bronx and select Manhattan schools with their SAT and SCT exams and college applications.
Haruna has also volunteered with the New York Special Olympics and tutoring other student-athletes while also serving as an usher at the University Church.
On the field, Haruna recorded 57 tackles, 45 solo, tied for fifth best on the team. He also led the Rams with eight pass breakups and forced one fumble.
