Bronx, N.Y. -
As the 2010-11 season begins to wind down, the Fordham University Athletic Department held its 77th annual Block F Awards Dinner at the Villa Barone Manor on May 4th to honor Fordham University's student-athletes for their accomplishments during the academic year.
Among those honored was Brian Schmidt, who was named the 2010-11 Men's Indoor Track and Field Most Valuable Player.
Schmidt enjoyed a stellar senior indoor campaign, breaking school records in the 500 and 800 meter events, while also being a part of the school record 4x800 relay that ranked second in the country this year. He defended his Atlantic 10 title in the 800 meter run, helping Fordham finish third at A-10's, the team's highest ever finish.
In the 4x800 relay, Schmidt teamed with John Cosgrove, Kevin Fitzgerald and Ryan Polo to earnd All-East honors, as they placed second in a school record time of 7:26.00 at the IC4A Championships on March 6th. The group broke the previous mark of 7:27.2, set by Eric Trammell, Gene McCarthy, Alex Trammell, and John Jurgens in 1975. The time was also the second fastest in the country this season, behind only Notre Dame (7:25.31).
At the Atlantic 10 Championship, Schmidt earned First Team All-Conference honors with the winning 4x800 relay as well as defending his 800m title.
