Katie McDermott Wins Fordham's Kieran Award at 77th Block F Dinner

Bronx, N.Y. - As the 2010-11 season begins to wind down, the Fordham University Athletic Department held its 77th annual Block F Awards Dinner at the Villa Barone Manor on May 4th to honor Fordham University's student-athletes for their accomplishments during the academic year.

Among those honored were Katie McDermott, who was the recipient of the Kieran Award, presented to the Fordham College senior athlete who has made significant academic and athletic contributions. The award honors the memory of John Kieran, Fordham College Class of 1912, and a famous radio broadcaster, sports editor of the New York Times and a member of Baseball's Hall of Fame.

McDermott, a Psychology major, is a four-year member of the women's soccer team. Posting a 3.87 GPA in, she was an Academic All-Atlantic 10 selection as a senior, as well as a Second Team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District pick.

On the pitch, McDermott earned All-Atlantic 10 honors in each of her four years becoming the first Fordham women's soccer player to earn All-Conference honors in each of her four seasons. She appeared in 78 career games, which ties the program's all-time mark, and finished her outstanding career with 13 goals and 12 assists for 38 points. She is tied for fifth in career assists at Fordham and 11th in points, while starting 72 contests, tied for third all-time.

In 2010, McDermott finished third on the team in scoring with three goals and four assists for 10 points, and was a candidate for the Lowe's Senior Class Award. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

McDermott was also presented an Athlete Academic Achievement Awards, given to senior student-athletes selected for outstanding athletic and academic achievement with a 3.5 GPA or better.

Michelle Ancelj


Also honored from the women's soccer squad was Michelle Ancelj, who was named the team's Most Valuable Player.

Alcelj enjoyed a solid senior season, scoring five goals and three assists for 13 points. She led the team in goals and points and had three game-winning goals, tying her for fifth in the Atlantic 10. For her career, Ancelj accumulated 17 goals and five assists for 39 points. She is tied for sixth on the Fordham career goals list and tenth on the all-time scoring list.
