Bronx, N.Y. -
As the 2010-11 season begins to wind down, the Fordham University Athletic Department held its 77th annual Block F Awards Dinner at the Villa Barone Manor on May 4th to honor Fordham University's student-athletes for their accomplishments during the academic year.
Among those honored was Brenton Butler, who was the recipient of the Terence O'Donnell Award, presented to the Fordham athlete who best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship, loyalty, dedication and self-discipline. The award is in memory of Terry O'Donnell, a 1955 graduate who died in a military plane crash shortly after graduation.
A three-year captain, Butler returned for a fifth-year this season to help a new coaching staff adjust to Fordham and to provide experience to a young team. He helped the new coaching staff get acclimated when they first arrived and then gave the staff instant credibility with the other players and the university in general.
One of the most beloved student-athletes on campus, Butler graduates Fordham as the school's eighth all-time leading scorer despite playing most of 2010-11 with a shoulder injury that required surgery when the season was over. Despite the trails and tribulations of the year, he maintained a positive attitude is a true man of Fordham.
Over his career, Butler scored 1,525 points and recorded 21 20-point games. He also ranks third on the school's all-time three-pointers made list with 232.
On the year, Butler averaged 14.6 ppg, connecting on a team-high 58 three-pointers while also dishing out a team-best 91 assists. He ranked 13th in the Atlantic 10 in scoring and third in free throw percentage, hitting 82 of his 98 charity shots on the year (83.7%), and was fourth in the league in three-pointers made/game (2.1). He set a career-high with seven three-pointers in a season-ending win over Massachusetts.
Butler was also named the 2010-11 men's basketball Most Valuable Player.
