The Fordham track & field team was proud to announce on Wednesday, that freshmen Anisa Arsenault and Sam Houston have qualified for the 2011 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championship, which will be held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, from June 23rd-25th.
To qualify for the Junior Championship, an athlete classification shall be limited to those who are fourteen (14) years or older on the day of competition and will not become twenty (20) years of age during the year of the competition. The qualifying window is then from June 23, 2010 - June 19, 2011 (indoor and outdoor competitions).
Arsenault qualified for the Junior Championship at the 2011 Metropolitan Championship on April 15th, where she won the 5,000 meter run in 17:14.4, which also qualified her for the ECAC Championship, which is set to take place this weekend in Princeton, New Jersey. The qualifying standard for the Junior Championship in the 5,000 meters is 17:50.0.
Houston had his qualifying marker more recently at this past weekend's Atlantic 10 Championship. Houston finished third in the decathlon with a score of 6,448 points, breaking the Fordham school record of 6,171 points by Matt Spaccarelli in 2007. Houston finished first in four of the ten decathlon events, and was in the top three in seven of ten events. The qualifying standard for the Junior Championship in the decathlon is 6,200 points.
