Hassell Breaks Javelin Throw Record as Track & Field Gets Ready For Metropolitan Championship at Rutgers

Piscataway, N.J. - The Fordham track & field team was back at work on Saturday at the Rutgers Invitational, preparing for next week's Metropolitan Championship. The Rams had a solid day, posting nine season-best marks, 11 top five finishes, and one school record by Blair Hassell.

Hassell was the highlight of the day, as she broke her own school record in the javelin throw with a distance of 132' 1", which was good for a fourth place finish. She broke her previous mark of 129' 3 ½", set last year.

In addition to Hassell, Anisa Arsenault had the Rams' best overall finish, taking second in the 3,000 meter run in a season-best time of 9:59.58.

Sherilyn Groeninger and Averie Sheppard also had strong performances in the sprint and hurdles events. Groeninger placed eighth in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes, posting season-best times of 12.55 and 26.21 seconds, respectively, while Sheppard was fourth in the 100 meter hurdles in a season-best time of 15.29 seconds and tenth in the 400 meter hurdles in a season-best time of 1:08.85. Both Groeninger and Sheppard were also a part of the 4x100 relay with Titi Fagade and Elisabeth Warren, which placed fourth in 49.60 seconds.

Courtnay Newman also had a strong day, placing in the top 11 in three different events. She was third in the high jump, clearing a season-best 5' 4 ¼", seventh in the javelin throw (114' 0"), and 11th in the 100 meter hurdles (16.14).

Other top performances included Ashley Davis taking sixth in the 1500 meters (4:51.18) and Kelly Connolly placing seventh in the 400 meters (58.75).

In the men's competition, Sean Atkinson led the way with two top five finishes, placing third in the 400 meter hurdles in a season-best time of 55.59 seconds, while taking fifth in the 400 meters in a season-best time of 48.86 seconds.

On top of Atkinson, Pat Brown and Brian Walter each took fifth in their respective events, as Brown posted a mark of 147' 7" in the hammer throw with Walter clocking in at 1:55.51 in the 800 meters. The Rams placed fourth and fifth in the pole vault with Keegan Talty clearing a season-best height of 13' 9 ¼" with Daniel Chediak right behind him at 13' 3 ½".

Other top performances were put in by Sam Houston, who was seventh in the javelin throw (150' 11), Ryan Polo, who was ninth in the 800 meters (1:55.92), and Daniel Clemens, who was ninth in the 110 meter hurdles (16.24).

The Fordham track & field team has one more tune-up for the Metropolitan Championship on Monday, April 11th, as they run at the St. John's Monday Meeting in Jamaica, N.Y.
