Fordham's Chris Gaston Named Second Team All-Met

April 28, 2011

Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham University sophomore forward Chris Gaston (Union City, N.J./St. Anthony) was named Second Team All-Met at the 78th Haggerty Awards Dinner, presented by the National Invitation Tournament and the Met Basketball Writers Association, on Tuesday night at the Westchester Marriott.

It is the second postseason accolade for Gaston who was also named Honorable Mention All-Atlantic 10 in voting conducted by the league's 14 head men's basketball coaches last month.

Gaston led the 2010-11 Fordham squad in both scoring and rebounding for the second straight year, averaging 15.9 ppg and 11.3 rpg. He also recorded 41 blocks, 38 assists and a team-high 26 steals. Gaston led the Atlantic 10 in rebounding and in defensive rebounding (7.9/game) and ranked ninth in the conference in scoring, seventh in blocked shots and third in offensive rebounding.

Gaston registered 17 doubles-doubles last year, the most for any Atlantic 10 player and the 15th most in the NCAA Division I. He was also fourth in the NCAA in rebounding.

On the year Gaston set new career highs in both scoring and rebounding, netting 27 points at Temple on February 9th and grabbing 20 rebounds at Lehigh on December 4th, the top rebounding game for an Atlantic 10 player this year.

Last year, Gaston, the 2010 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, had the most successful freshman campaign for any Fordham men's basketball player, leading the Rams in both scoring, averaging 18.0 ppg, and rebounding, averaging 11.4 rpg. His 504 points was a record for a Fordham freshman, surpassing Bevon Robin's former mark of 495 points in 1997-99, while his 319 rebounds was the second best for a Fordham rookie, four shy of Ed Conlin's freshman record of 323 set in 1951-52.

Over his career, Gaston has 950 career points and 635 career rebounds. He is ranked 39th on the Fordham all-time scoring list and 14th on the school's career rebounding list. Gaston is also among Fordham's top ten in career blocks (91) and has 36 career double-doubles in 56 career games.

The Rams closed out the 2010-11 season with a 7-21 overall record, 1-15 in the Atlantic 10. They closed out the season breaking a 41-game conference losing streak with a 77-73 win over Massachusetts in the Rose Hill Gym on March 5th.
