The Fordham Rams' golf team opened the spring schedule with a sixth place finish, out of 10 teams, at the Yale Spring Opener from the Yale University Golf Club in New Haven, Connecticut. Sophomore Brody Nieporte finished in 13th place amongst individual golfers.
The team had a one-day score of 614. They posted a 310 in the first round and improved to a 304 on the second 18 holes of the day. Fordham trailed Dartmouth by one point and came in ahead of seventh -spot dweller, and host, Yale University, who posted an overall score of 617. The leaders at the end of the day were the University of Rhode Island for the team standings, and Rhody's Andrew Fiorenzano, who shot a six-over 146 after 18 holes, to lead the individual competitors.
For Fordham, six golfers participated in the competition. After Nierporte's 77 and 74 for the 18 holes (which put him in 13th place), Jason Del Rosso led the Rams with a low-round of 73, and sat in 21st place. Freshman Ryan Donohue was tied with Del Rosso after posting rounds of 81 and 73. Next came 38th spot finisher, Devon O'Rourke who recorded scores of 79 and 80. Connor Monahan had rounds of 85 and 77 which put him in 49th position. Completing the scoring for Fordham was Nick Polvino, whose rounds of 83 and 82, catapulted him into 57th position.
The Yale Spring Opener on Sunday was the inaugural tournament for the Rams in their spring season. The 2011 campaign continues on Monday, April 4, when they travel to Philadelphia to compete at the 36 hole Penn Quaker Classic from the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, Pennsylvania.
