New Brunswick, N.J. - The Fordham University men's and women's outdoor track and field squads braved the elements on Saturday to conclude competition at the 2011 Metropolitan Outdoor Championship at Rutgers University where the men's team finished third of 15 teams and the women were also third of 16 teams.
The Fordham women were led by senior Kerri Gallagher, who won both the 800m and the 1500m, along with freshman Anisa Arsenault, who took gold in the 5000m. The Fordham men had one event winner, Julian Saad who won the 5000m, along with second place showings from Sam Houston in the decathlon and Brian Riley in the 3000m steeplechase.
The men's team title was won by Manhattan, who finished with 147 points, with Rutgers in second (135) and the Rams third (89). Rounding out the top five were Columbia (82) and Southern Connecticut State (76).
In the women's team competition, Rutgers took the championship with 178.33 points, followed by St. John's (151), Fordham (89), Saint Peter's (77), and Manhattan (69).
Gallagher won the 800m in a time of 2:18.54, beating St. John's Sarah Sudbury to the line by over three seconds. In the 1500m, Gallagher broke the tape in 4:41.63, beating Alasia Griebel by almost five seconds.
In the women's 5000m, Arsenault easily defeated the field, crossing the line in a season-best and ECAC qualifying time of 17:14.4, beating the runner-up, Marist's Addie DiFrancesco by 36 seconds.
Saad won the men's 5000m in a season-best time of 15:01.4, beating Manhattan's Tobias Lundgren to the line by just under seven seconds.
Blair Hassell recorded a second place finish for the women in the javelin, breaking her own school record with a throw of 41.56m (136' 4"), qualifying her for the ECAC Championships. Her previous school record throw of 132' 1' was set last week at the Rutgers Invitational.
Courtnay Newman also had a second place finish for the Rams, taking second in the high jump with a jump of 1.62m (5 ` 3.75"). Newman also placed ninth in the javelin (30.96m - 101' 7") and 12th in the 100m hurdles (15.97).
Houston placed second in the decathlon for the Fordham men with 6,258 points, finishing behind Manhattan's Felix Siljeback-Larsen who won the event with 6,525 points. Houston won five events in the competition: the 100m (11.1), long jump (6.94m - 22' 9.25", a season-best), high jump (1.94m - 6' 4.25", a season best), 400m (50.0) and 1500m (4:48.74).
Riley crossed the 3000m steeplechase line in 9:37.3 for a second place finish, just 2.9 seconds behind winner Paul Gilhuley from St. Francis.
Other women who scored for the Rams included Elisabeth Warren, who took sixth in the long jump with a season-best leap of 5.33m (17' 6"), Kelly Connolly, who was sixth in the 800m (2:23.10) and Averie Sheppard, who placed eighth in the 100m hurdles (15.48).
Other Fordham men scoring at the championships include Sean Atkinson, who was third in the 400m hurdles (58.27), Brian Schmidt, who took fourth in the 800m (1:59.54), Rich Grandelli, who was fourth in the 3000m steeplechase (9:43.9), Michael Rossi, who was fifth in the 400m hurdles (1:00.37), Nick Synan, who was fifth in the 10,000m (32:23.8), Frank Massaro, who was sixth in the 200m (23.55) and sixth in the 100m (11.28 - season best), Christopher Lyons, who placed sixth in the 400m (51.82), Daniel Clemens, who was seventh in the 110m hurdles (16.59) and the 400 meter hurdles, Pat Brown, who took sixth in the hammer (46.82m - 153' 7"), Matt Collins, who was eighth in the 3000m steeplechase (10:03.4), Michael Bongiorno, who placed eighth in the 400m (52.04), John Cosgrove, who was eighth in the 800m (2:00.34), Tim Kazanjian, who was eighth in the 10,000m (33:20.2) and Keegan Talty, who was eighth in the pole vault (4.30m - 14' 1.25", a season best).
Other Fordham women competing included Titi Fagade, who was tenth in the 400m (1:02.45), Diane Bain, who was eleventh in the 400m (1:03.38), Sherilyn Groeninger, who was 12th in the 100m (12.75) and 14th in the 200m (26.98), Ashley Davis, who was 12th in the 800m (2:25.21) and Darleen Eiermann, who was 13th in the 100m hurdles (16.97) and 17th in the 400m hurdles (1:13.54).
Other men competing for Fordham included Casey Barrett, who was ninth in the 5000m (15:01.4 - season best), Daniel Chediak, who was ninth in the pole vault (4.15m - 13' 7.25"), Thomas Kelly, who was 17th in the 1500m (4:16.27) and Nick Delligatti, who was 20th in the 400m (53.93)
In women's relays, the 4x400 team of Warren, Fagade, Sheppard and Connolly placed second in a time of 4:14.65 as did the distance medley relay of Nako Nakatsuka, Groeninger, Christina Vivinetto and Arsenault in 13:13.91. The 4x800 relay of Christina Machado, Kerry Sorenson, Kellen Fitzgerald and Nako Nakatsuka was fifth (10:43.09).
In men's relays, the 4x400 team of Atkinson, Delligatti, Lyons and Schmidt took second in 3:42.12 while the distance medley relay of Paul Szczepaniak, Jarrett Anistranski, Tim Hutchinson and Sam Stuart was third in 11:04.37. The 4x100 team of Massaro, Lyons, Bongiorno and Atkinson placed fourth (44.38). The 4x800 relay of Cosgrove, Ryan Polo, Michael Rossi and Brian Walter placed fifth (8:29.55).
The men's and women's outdoor track and field squads will next be in action on Friday and Saturday, April 22nd and 23rd, as they compete at the Princeton Invitational at Princeton University.
