Despite attempts to beat the imminent weather by getting an early start, the 2011 Atlantic 10 Rowing Championship competition was halted on the Cooper River with three races remaining with Saint Joseph's being declared the 2011 team champions. Fordham finished in fifth place.
Three schools finished in a three-way tie for first place as Massachusetts and Rhode Island joined Saint Joseph's with 45 points. The Hawks owned the tiebreaker between the tied teams which reverted back to the overall finish in the Varsity 8 competition. Saint Joseph's finished second in the Varsity 8 (8:04.45) followed by Massachusetts in third (8:07.95) and Rhode Island in fourth (8:09.26).
Massachusetts was awarded second place for the overall championship, while Rhode Island finished third. Rounding out this year's field was Dayton in fourth (41 points), Fordham in fifth (27), George Washington in sixth (24), Temple in seventh (23), Duquesne in eighth (14) and La Salle in ninth (4).
Fordham opened the championship with the first Varsity 8 heat where the Rams placed third in a time of 8:41.13, to advance to the final. Fordham crossed the line behind Rhode Island and Temple in the heat but ahead of Duquesne and La Salle.
In the final, the Rams placed sixth in a time of 8:39.44, behind Dayton, Saint Joseph's, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Temple.
The Rams also competed in the second varsity 8, the varsity 4, the varsity 4 B and the novice 8. The second varsity 8 turned in a third place finish (9:14.78) in its heat to advance to the finals. Massachusetts won the heat followed by Rhode Island, Fordham and Duquesne. In the finals, the Rams placed sixth (8:39.44) behind Dayton, Saint Joseph's, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Temple.
The Varsity 4 finished fourth in its heat in a time of 10:56.77, advancing to the final. Fordham placed behind Rhode Island and Saint Joseph's and ahead of Duquesne. In the finals, the Rams were fifth in 10:57.41, crossing behind Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Saint Joseph's and Dayton and in front of Temple.
The Varsity 4 B placed second for the Rams in 10:34.21. Rhode Island won the race followed by Fordham, Duquesne, George Washington, Dayton and La Salle.
The Novice 8, which was the final event of the day and was shortened to 1750 meters, saw the Rams finish in fifth place in 10:56.93. Saint Joseph's won the race followed by Rhode Island, La Salle, Dayton and Fordham.
The Rams had boats entered in two of the three events that were canceled (Novice 4 final and Lightweight 4 final).
Following the regatta, it was announced that Fordham's Kayla Gaskey was named First Team All-Atlantic 10 and teammate Alyssa Sunofsky was named Second Team All-Conference. This is the first All-Atlantic 10 award for Gaskey while this is the second consecutive year Sunofsky has earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors.
The Fordham rowing squad will next be in action on Saturday, April 30th, as they compete in the ECAC Championships on the Cooper River in Collingswood, N.J.
