Bronx, N.Y. -
The Fordham Maroon Club will host its annual barbeque on Saturday, May 7th at 1:00 PM under the Coffey Field bleachers. The day coincides with Alumni Day events for baseball and men's tennis, as well as the Rams' Atlantic 10 baseball game against the Saint Joseph's Hawks and a ceremony.
The first event of the day is Baseball Alumni Day with registration beginning at 11:00 AM. The day includes batting practice for Alumni, along with a short game and barbeque. Then, prior to the Fordham-Saint Joseph's baseball game, Fordham will honor former head coach Gil McDougald in a special pre-game ceremony with his family and former players.
McDougald coached the Rams from 1970-76, posting a record of 100-79-4, good for a .551 winning percentage. He ranks ninth in baseball coaching wins at Fordham, and had the Rams post back-to-back 20-win seasons in 1974 and 1975.
Two of the most memorable moments during McDougald's stint at Fordham came in 1973 and 1975. In 1973, Billy Hill threw the 11th no-hitter in Fordham history against St. Peter's College, and still stands as the last 9-inning no-hitter pitched at Rose Hill, while in 1975, the Rams set a single-game team record with nine home runs against St. Francis College.
McDougald came to Fordham after a 10-year career with the New York Yankees, where he was a five-time American League All-Star, a member of eight World Series teams, and won five World Championships. Of those five All-Star appearances, he was selected to represent the American League at three different positions: second base, shortstop, and third base.
Men's Tennis Alumni Day will get started at 11:30 AM at the Hawthorn/Rooney Tennis Courts, which will feature a meet and greet with men's tennis coach Cory Hubbard and the current team, some alumni action on the courts, as well as a barbeque to follow.
