Philadelphia, Pa. - Complete Results
The Fordham University women's crew competed on Saturday at the 2011 Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill River where the Varsity 8 advanced to the Grand Final, placing sixth overall.
The Varsity 8 of Alyssa Sunofsky, Celine Egraz, Maureen White, Elizabeth Helmer, Kayla Gaskey, Elizabeth Anderson, Catherine Helmer and Kate Branciforte with Abigail Paparo at coxswain placed second in their heat in 6:40.86, just 1.22 seconds behind Saint Joseph's, to advance to the final. The Rams beat Loyola, Lehigh and La Salle in the heat.
In the finals, the Rams placed sixth in 6:54.96, behind Rutgers, Saint Joseph's, Navy, Drexel and Bucknell.
Other shells competing for the Rams included two Novice 8 teams along with a varsity 4 and a Junior Varsity 8, with three of the four shells placing second.
The Varsity 4 of Alexandra Anello, Katelyn Lakes, Gabriela Balmaseda and Ursula Leone with Meghan Patenaude at coxswain, placed fourth in a time of 8:10.15, behind Delaware, Rutgers (Canden), and Marist but ahead of Bryn Mawr.
The Junior Varsity 8 of Jean Beagle, Sossi Megan, Alexandra McDonald, Cara McGonigle, Jenny Looby, Allie Fitzmoris, Molly McLaughlin, and Alyssa Cantarella, with Nora Doyle at coxswain, placed fourth in 7:02.26, ahead of Villanova and Sacred Heart and behind Bucknell, Delaware and Navy.
The Novice 1st 8 of MariaLuisa Capuano, Megan Sullivan, Kara Davis, Ava Koziak, Sarah Tully, Morgan Hus, Jenn Amoroso, and Claire Bohrer, with Kimberly Bozzo at coxswain, took fourth in its heat in 7:26.86, ahead of Loyola and Robert Morris but behind Villanova, Drexel and La Salle. The Novice 2nd 8 of Katie Fisher, Kathy Matthiesen, Christina Shalhoub, Maureen Paparo, Drue Thomas, Megan Feerick, Yuraima Estevez and Molly Dunbar, with Sara Brothman at coxswain, finished sixth in its heat in 8:22.11. Fordham was the only college to have two novice boats entered in the women's novice 8 event.
The Fordham rowing squad will next be in action on April 2nd and 3rd as they travel to San Diego, California, to compete in the San Diego Crew Classic.
