The Atlantic 10 Conference announced the 2010-11 Academic All-Conference team for swimming & diving this week with two Rams being honored, as seniors Robert Gitman (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan Wagner) and Megan McGorry (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) were both honored by the league in a vote by the conference's sports information directors.
With the awards to Gitman and McGorry, the Fordham men's swimming & diving team extended a streak of having at least one student-athlete on the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team to 12 straight years, while Fordham has now had at least one member of the women's swimming & diving team on the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team in seven of the last eight years.
A 2010-11 team captain, Gitman is a General Science major, boasting a 3.55 GPA, and was recently honored at Fordham's Breakfast for Champions, which honors all student-athlete with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Gitman scored in four events at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship, led by a fifth place finish in the 200-yard backstroke, while also placing 11th overall in the 100-yard backstroke and 14th in the 200-yard individual medley. Gitman was a member of the 800-yard freestyle relay team as well, which took sixth overall.
McGorry is set to graduate in May with a degree in Communications & Media Studies and boasts a 3.35 GPA.
McGorry had an outstanding Atlantic 10 Championship, earning Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in three events and set three school records. She placed second in the 500-yard freestyle in a school record time of 4:50.05, as well as second as a member of the 400-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relay teams. McGorry also placed third in 200-yard freestyle and 1650-yard freestyle events, scoring in five total events. He posted a school record time of 16:43.96 in the 1650-yard freestyle, while the 1000-yard portion of that race also set the school record in 10:07.25.
