Fresh off a very strong indoor season, the Fordham track & field team began its outdoor season this weekend at the Battleground Relays, hosted by the University of Mary Washington. No team scores were kept, but Fordham came away with 17 event winners, including seven in relay events.
In the individual track events, Fordham had wins in the men's 1500 meters, 3,000 meters, 10,000 meters, 400 intermediate hurdles, and 3,000 meter steeplechase, as well as the women's 100 meters and the 3,000 meters.
Fordham's Brian Schmidt won the men's 1,500 meters in a time of 4:03.89, and was followed by Sam Stuart taking the 3,000 meter run in 9:01.43 and Michael Belgiovine winning the 10,000 meter run in 33:47.12. In both the 3,000 and 10,000 meters, Fordham placed each of the top three finishers with Casey Barrett (9:05.10) and Tom Kelly (9:12.28) taking second and third respectively in the 3,000 meters, and Julian Saad (33:47.15) and Nick Synan (33:47.16) placing second and third in the 10,000 meters.
Running in the 400 intermediate hurdles for the first time in his career, Sean Atkinson won the event in 57.72 seconds, while Rich Grandelli took home the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:56.10.
On the women's side, Sherilyn Groeninger won the 100 meter dash in 12.57 seconds with Anisa Arsenault taking the top spot in the 3,000 meters in 10:24.26.
Both Groeninger and Arsenault helped the women's relay teams win four of the five relay events that Fordham participated in. Groeninger joined Averie Sheppard, Kelly Connolly, and Elisabeth Warren to win the 4x100 relay in 49.29 seconds, and later joined Warren, Connolly, and Kerri Gallagher to win the sprint medley relay in 1:50.29.
Arsenault was a member of the distance medley relay team with Diane Bain, Kellen Fitzgerald, and Mairin O'Connor, which won the event in 13:07.22. The final women's relay winner was the 4x800 relay, consisting of Ashley Davis, Siobhan Cooney, Connolly, and Gallagher, as the team posted a time of 9:54.70.
In the men's relays, Fordham won three of the four relays it participated in, starting with the 4x100 relay, where Aaron Mays, Atkinson, Nick Delligatti, and Frank Massaro placed first in 43.20 seconds. In the 4x800 relay, it was Brian Walter, Jarrett Anistranski, Stephen Donnelly, and John Cosgrove winning the top spot in 7:56.61, while Sam Houston, Cosgrove, Michael Bongiorno, and Anistranski won the sprint medley relay in 3:39.92.
In the field events, Fordham had three first place finishes in the women's competition and third second place finishes on the men's side. Blair Hassell won the women's javelin throw with a distance of 127' 3", while Warren won the long jump event with a mark of 16' 5" and Courtnay Newman took home the high jump event, clearing 5' 1 ¾". On the men's side, Pat Brown was second in the hammer throw with a distance of 152' 3", followed by Daniel Chediak's second place performance in the pole vault, clearing 12' 11 ¾" and Houston's runner-up finish in the long jump with a mark of 21' 5 ¼".
The Fordham track & field team will next be in action on Friday, March 25th, as the team begins competition at the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State.
