Day two of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championships is in the books at the Flickinger Center in Buffalo, New York. The Fordham women's team had another stellar day, setting four school records. However, the Rams find themselves back a spot in the overall standings after seven events.
Richmond took over first place with 296 points, followed by Fordham with 220. La Salle is currently in third with 149.5, followed by Massachusetts (142), St. Bonaventure (112), Rhode Island (108), George Washington (107.5), Saint Louis (97), Duquesne (93), and Xavier (85).
The competition began with the 500 yard freestyle event, where three Rams found their way into the finals. Topping the trio was senior Megan McGorry, who placed second overall in a school record time and NCAA "B" qualifying time of 4:50.05. She broke the previous school mark of 4:52.07, set by Caitlin Napoli in 2009. Freshman Kara Field placed sixth overall in the 500 freestyle in her personal-best time of 4:59.42, while senior Alexandra Wessel was in the "B" final, taking 12th overall in her season-best time of 5:02.79.
The next women's event was the 200 yard individual medley, which saw junior Courtney Collyer and freshman Shannon Jones make the finals. In the "A" final, Collyer broke her own school record, by placing fourth overall in a time of 2:03.06. Her previous mark was 2:03.55, set last season. In the "B" final, Jones was the 12th overall finisher, clocking in with a personal-best time of 2:08.24.
The competition continued with the 50 yard freestyle, where once again Fordham had two representatives in the finals with sophomores
Brienne Ryan and
Kellie Lyver. Ryan placed third in the "A" final with a school record time of 23.36 seconds, breaking her own mark of 23.57 seconds, set last year. In the "B" final, Lyver was third in the race, good for 11th overall in a season-best time of 23.90 seconds.
The final women's event of day two was the 200 freestyle relay, where the Rams' team of Lyver, Kelly Bunster, Christina Cosentino, and Collyer, set the fourth school record of the day, taking bronze in a time of 1:34.90. The previous record was 1:35.21 set last year by Lyver, Cosentino, Allie Alessi, and Napoli.
Competition at the Championship will continue on Friday morning with trials at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m.
