2011 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championships Get Underway in Buffalo

Buffalo, N.Y. - The 2011 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championships are underway at the Flickinger Center in Buffalo, New York. Through day one, the Fordham women's team began its title defense, as the Rams lead the 10-team competition, while the men's team is sixth out of seven teams.

In the women's competition, Fordham leads with 111 points through three events, followed by Massachusetts (89), Richmond (88) and La Salle (84). Rounding out the women's scoring is St. Bonaventure (74), St. Louis (61), Rhode Island (60), Xavier (44), Duquesne (42) and George Washington (38).

In the men's competition, Massachusetts sit atop the men's standings with 80 points after two events, followed by St. Bonaventure and Xavier, who are tied with 64 points. Rounding out the scoring is La Salle (62), George Washington (56), Fordham (54) and St Louis (48).

The first event of the evening was the 200 medley relay, which saw Fordham's team of Brienne Ryan, Courtney Collyer, Kelly Bunster, and Kellie Lyver take second place in a season-best time of 1:41.91.

Next up, the Fordham men's 200 medley relay team, consisting of Billy Colton, Matthew Grabiak, Shintaro Noguchi, and Devon Morris, placed fifth overall in a school record time of 1:31.29. It broke the old mark of 1:31.62, set in 2009.

The next event was the finals of the women's one-meter diving competition, which saw Fordham place three divers in the top eight. Elizabeth Dorger was the top finisher in third place with a score of 229.30, followed immediately by Andrea Krok in fourth place with a total of 219.65. Brittany Salas rounded out the scoring in seventh place with a tally of 203.80.

The final events of day one were the 800 freestyle relays. In the women's race, Fordham's team of Megan McGorry, Alexandra Wessel, Kara Field, and Brienne Ryan earned the Rams' second runner-up finish in a season-best time of 7:25.61.

On the men's side, Fordham's group of Thomas Yi, Nick Belfanti, John Kundrat, and Robert Gitman placed sixth overall in a season-best time of 6:53.02.

Day two of the Atlantic 10 Championship continues on Thursday morning with trials at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m.
