Competition got underway on Friday at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship, held at Mackal Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Rhode Island. A total of 11 events were finished on day one, while setting up the finals of 14 other events. Of those finals, Fordham had participants in six of those events.
Through day one in the women's competition, Dayton leads the way with 77 points through six events. The Flyers are followed by Rhode Island with 35 and Charlotte with 30. Those three teams are followed by Saint Louis (20), La Salle (19), Duquesne (19), Massachusetts (12), Richmond (9), Saint Joseph's (6), Temple (5), Fordham (2), and Xavier (0).
Fordham scored in two women's events, and had three runners qualify for their respective finals on Saturday.
Junior Elisabeth Warren scored in the long jump, placing eighth with a season-best mark of 17' 8 ¾", while freshman Anisa Arsenault placed eighth in the 5,000 meter run in a season-best time of 17:21.71.
Qualifiers for Saturday's finals included senior Sherilyn Groeninger in the 55 meter dash, as she tied her own school record at 7.33 seconds, junior Kelly Connolly in the 500 meters (1:17.05) and senior Kerri Gallagher in the 1,000 meters (3:00.23).
On top of those finishes, Groeninger was also 15th in the 200 meter dash (26.20), sophomore Courtnay Newman was 14th in the 55 meter hurdles (season-best - 8.83), sophomore Christina Machado was 20th in the 800 meters (personal-best - 2:27.42), and junior Blair Hassell was 20th in the weight throw (36' 10 ¼"). The women's distance medley relay of Ashley Davis, Averie Sheppard, Diane Bain, and Mairin O'Connor were also 12th in 12:58.78.
In the men's competition, Rhode Island has a half point lead over Massachusetts, 37.5-37. Charlotte is in third with 28.5 points, followed by Saint Louis (20), Temple (19), Richmond (16), Xavier (13), La Salle (9), Fordham (8), and Saint Joseph's (7).
Fordham scored in two men's events, and had six runners qualify for Saturday's finals in the 400 meters, 800 meters, and 1,000 meters.
Sophomore Keegan Talty placed sixth overall in the pole vault, clearing a personal-best height of 14' 3 ¼", while the distance medley relay of Tom Kelly, Christopher Lyons, Tim Hutchinson, and Michael Belgiovine placed fourth overall in a time of 10:11.72.
In the track preliminaries, sophomore
Sean Atkinson qualified fourth in the 400 meters at 50.15 seconds, while sophomore
John Cosgrove and senior
Brian Schmidt qualified 1-2 in the 800 meters in 1:56.37 and 1:56.92, respectively. In the 1,000 meters, Fordham had three runners qualify for the final, which included freshman
Brian Walter (2:32.27) and junior
Kevin Fitzgerald (2:32.44) posting the top two times. Freshman
Ryan Polo was the third Ram to qualify in 2:33.28.
Like the 1,000 meter event, Fordham has a chance of scoring three in the men's heptathlon, as freshman Sam Houston, senior Augustus Gleason, and senior Vincent Servello are within scoring range.
Through four events, Houston is third with 2,685 points, after placing second in the 55 meter dash (6.84), the shot put (38' 8 ¾"), and the high jump (6' 6 ¼"), and seventh in the long jump (18' 10 ¾").
Gleason is fourth with 2,547 points, after finishing second in the long jump (20' 1 ½"), third in the 55 meter dash (7.00) and shot put (37' 3 ¼"), and sixth in the high jump (6' ½").
Servello rounds out the group in ninth with 2,147 points, as he placed seventh in the shot put (31' 10"), eighth in the long jump (18' 4 ¼"), and ninth in the 55 meter dash (7.26) and the high jump (5' 7 ¾").
In other events, junior Nick Delligatti (500 - 1:06.47) and junior Ken Baron (pole vault - 13' 9 ¼") just missed out on scoring, as each placed tenth in their respective events, with senior Pat Brown taking ninth in the weight throw with a mark of 50' 8 ¾". Junior Frank Massaro (400 - 52.63) and sophomore Michael Bongiorno (500 - 1:06.67) each took 12th in their events with sophomore Daniel Clemens (8.34) and freshman Mackenzie Murphy (8.37) placing 13th and 14th in the 55 meter hurdles.
Rounding out the day one competitors were senior Aaron Mays in the long jump (14th - 20' 8 ½"), senior Jarrett Anistranski in the 500 meters (1:07.95), and sophomore Nick Synan in the 5,000 meter run (18th - 15:55.50).
Day two of the Atlantic 10 Championship will begin at 9:00 AM on Saturday.
