Fordham University senior Brian Schmidt (Malverne, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and freshman Ryan Polo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) were named Atlantic 10 Men's Indoor Track & Field Performer and Rookie of the Week, respectively on Monday, it was announced by the league office.
Schmidt continued his streak of impressive performances at the Valentine's Day Classic in Boston this past weekend. He bettered his own school record set last week in the 800 meters, finishing fifth overall in an Atlantic 10 best time of 1:50.81. The time was also an NCAA Provisional qualifier.
Schmidt then came back in less than an hour to compete in the 4x400 relay, helping the team set a new season-best time of 3:16.27, which is second-best in the conference this season.
Polo qualified for the IC4A Championship in the 1,000 meters at the Valentine's Day Classic on Saturday. He placed seventh overall in a season-best time of 2:27.91
Schmidt, Polo, and the rest of the Fordham track & field teams will next be in action on February 18-19, as they compete at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship, held at the University of Rhode Island Mackal Fieldhouse.
