Middletown, Conn. -
A shorthanded Fordham squash team made its way to Middletown, Connecticut this past weekend for the Wesleyan Round Robin, taking on some stiff competition as three of the four opponents ranked in the top 40 in the country.
In the team's opener on Saturday, the Rams, playing with only seven players, took on host Wesleyan, which ranked 19th in the country. The Rams were swept in all seven matches with the best performance coming from Alex Williams, who fell to Jeff Berman, 11-2, 11-3, and 11-4, at the #4 slot.
Later on Saturday, the Rams had a re-match with Bucknell, whom they had played earlier this season at the Navy Round Robin. Unfortunately for Fordham, the result was the same as the earlier meeting: a 9-0 loss.
In that match, Fordham's Andriy Kulak and Andrew Grosner fought hard at the #1 and #2 slots respectively. Kulak fell to Hayden Radovich, 12-10, 11-3, and 11-4, while Grosner dropped his match to Chris Santoro, 11-9, 11-3, and 11-8.
On Sunday, the Rams played their matches close against both Colgate and Johns Hopkins, but couldn't overcome the numbers game, as the Rams were again swept in both matches.
Against Colgate, Kulak took a set off of Gray Huffard, but fell in four sets at the #1 slot, 11-1, 11-2, 10-12, and 11-7. It was the lone match that Fordham was not swept in straight sets.
The Rams final match of the weekend came against Johns Hopkins, where the Rams were once again shut out. Kulak and Grosner led the way with two tight matches. Kulak fell to Michael Hur in four sets, 11-5, 13-11, 8-11, and 11-3, while Grosner lost to Nathan Li, 13-11, 12-10, and 11-7.
The Fordham squash team will next be in action on Wednesday, December 7th, when the Rams host their home opener against NYU at the Lombardi Center Squash Courts.
