Fordham Opens 2011 Holiday Classic with Navy on Thursday

Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham University women's basketball squad will look to improve to 4-1 at home this season as the team hosts the 2011 Fordham Holiday Classic on Thursday and Friday. The Rams will open the tournament by hosting the Navy Midshipmen on Thursday, December 29, at 12:00 P.M. The second game of the day features Boston University and Coppin State. The Rams and the Naval Academy will meet for the thirteenth time on Thursday with Fordham leading the all-time series, 7-5. The two schools have met six times in the Rose Hill Gym with each team, winning three of those contests. Navy has taken the last two meetings from the Rams, including a 70-66 overtime victory, on January 5, 2009. Fordham has a 1-1 record against Patriot League schools this season, having defeated Holy Cross on November 19 in Worcester, while losing at Bucknell on December 6.

The Rams enter the contest with a 7-4 record on the heels of a 76-53 victory over Winthrop on December 17. The win was the second straight victory for the team and the 76 points was its highest total of the season. In that game, three Rams reached double figures in scoring, led by Becky Peters with 21 points.

Fordham has three players averaging in double figures for scoring beginning with Peters at 11.8 ppg. Abigail Corning is scoring 11.0 ppg and leads the team in three-point percentage (.443), while Arielle Collins enters play averaging 10.9 ppg, and leads the squad in assists (36) and steals (16).

The Middies enter the game with a 6-5 mark after falling to Maryland-Baltimore County, 54-46, on Tuesday, December 20th. The team is led in scoring by Jade Geif at 10.4, followed by Audrey Bauer (10.2 ppg) and Kara Pollinger (8.9 ppg).

The winners of the games on Thursday will meet for the championship on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and the losers of Thursday's action will play in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m.

Following the Holiday Classic, the Rams will open the New Year with a matchup against Ivy League foe, Cornell University, on Monday, January 2nd, at 7:00 PM from the Rose Hill Gym.
