Bronx, N.Y. -
Before heading out for three straight road games, the Fordham women's basketball team will host the University of San Diego in the Rose Hill Gym on Saturday, December 3, at 1:00 PM. The game can be heard live on the internet on www.WFUV.org.
Fordham and San Diego will meet for just the fourth time on Saturday in the Rose Hill Gym. The series between the two schools began in 1987 when the Toreros beat the Rams, 75-57, in San Diego. The two sides met again in California in 1996 with Fordham winning, 55-46. The most recent meeting saw San Diego win, 73-63 in a game played at St. John's in 2001.
Fordham enters the contest with a 4-2 mark, having defeated Cleveland State, Holy Cross, UCF and Manhattan. Most recently, the Rams came from behind to defeat the Jaspers 59-49, in the 43rd annual "Battle of the Bronx", Fordham's third win in its last four games.
The Rams will be led into the game by Abigail Corning and Christina Gaskin, who were named Atlantic 10 Co-Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Monday. Corning is having a breakout year as a sophomore, leading the team in scoring (14.3 ppg) and netting double-figures in five games this season. Against UCF last Friday, a 70-57 Fordham win, Corning had a career day, scoring a career-high 29 points, on 11-of-15 shooting (73.3%), including 3-of-3 from behind the three-point line.
Gaskin, a freshman forward from Hockley, England, reached double-figures in scoring in both games of the UCF Thanksgiving Tournament, including a double-double performance of ten points and 12 rebounds against the hosts on Friday. She is averaging 8.2 ppg and 6.3 rpg on the year.
The Toreros enter the game with a 5-1 record. Most recently, they defeated Columbia, 54-32, on Thursday. The team has also defeated Cal State San Marcos, Seattle, Louisiana-Lafayette and Colgate. Offensively, San Diego is led by Dominique Conners (15.5 PPG) and Amy Kame (13.4 PPG).
Following Saturday's game, the Rams return the road for three games beginning with a trip to Bucknell on Tuesday, December 6 at 7:00 PM.
