The Fordham University Rams continue their 2011-12 season by traveling down to West Long Branch, N.J., to face the Monmouth University Hawks in the Multipurpose Activity Center on Saturday, December 10th, at 7:00 p.m. The game can be heard live on WFUV (90.7 FM) and on wfuv.org. Fordham Game Notes
Fordham enters the game with a 3-4 record after a loss at Manhattan College in the 104th edition of the Battle of the Bronx on Wednesday night. Monmouth enters the game with a 1-8 record, after a 69-67 win at Navy on Tuesday.
On the court, Fordham is led by junior Chris Gaston, who has notched a double-double in five of the past six games and has 41st in his career. He has accumulated 699 career rebounds, moving him ahead of John Coalman (1958-61) and into tenth place on the Rams' all-time rebounding list, 44 behind Bill Carlson (1949-52), and he now has 1,044, career points, good for 30th on the Rams' all-time scoring list, eight behind Sanford Jenkins (1988-92) for 29th place.
THE MONMOUTH SERIES: Saturday night's contest will be the third meeting between Fordham and Monmouth on the hardwood... The Rams won the first matchup, 63-54 on November 30, 1985 in the Rose Hill Gym and then defeated the Hawks again, 81-68, on November 28, 1986, in the first round of the Coast City Classic at Monmouth... Fordham is 59-25 all-time against schools currently in the Northeast Conference... Last year, the Rams went 1-1 against NEC schools with a win over Sacred Heart and a loss to eventual NEC champions, Long Island.
WHO'S HOT? : Junior forward Chris Gaston has scored in double figures in six of the first seven games, averaging a team-best 13.4 ppg on the year... He also has recorded a double-double in each of the five of the seven games, most recently scoring ten points and grabbing ten rebounds against Hampton on Monday (he had a streak of five straight double-double halted at Manhattan on Wednesday)... He now has 41 career double-doubles in 63 career games... Gaston is also second on the team with 12 blocks, six of those coming in the Loyola game... Freshman guard Devon McMillan is averaging 14.3 ppg over the past four games and 12.4 ppg on the season, second best on the squad... He netted a game-high 20 points in the Colgate game, while also recording five steals, and then finished with 16 versus Lehigh and 12 in the Manhattan loss... McMillan also leads the team in assists with 19... Senior center Kervin Bristol is averaging 9.8 rpg over the past four games, including tying his career-high with 16 boards in the win over Hampton on Monday... He also chipped in with seven points in the Hampton game and he leads the team with 13 blocks... Sophomore guard Branden Frazier scored 13 points against Lehigh, shooting 6-for-10 from the field, and ten more versus Hampton... He is averaging 10.6 ppg, third best on the team, and is second on the team with 17 assists.
A FAMILIAR FACE: When Fordham ventures down to Monmouth for the game Saturday night, the Rams will see a familiar face on the Hawks' bench, Monmouth assistant coach Derrick Phelps. Last year, Phelps, who played at North Carolina with Monmouth head coach King Rice, served as the Fordham video coordinator under head coach Tom Pecora.
Freshman guard DC Gaitley will also be familiar with the Monmouth campus as his mother, Stephanie, served as the head women's basketball coach of the Hawks from until last spring when she was named head coach at Fordham.
