The Fordham women's basketball team will conclude its slate of four straight road games with a trip across the Bronx to face Manhattan College in the 43rd annual "Battle of the Bronx" on Wednesday. The game can be heard live on the internet on www.WFUV.org.
The two schools began their rivalry in 1980, when both were members of the MAAC conference and they have met continually since then with Jaspers leading the all-time series 24-18, taking the last two meetings. In Draddy Gymnasium, the Jaspers lead the series, 16-4, while the Rams have a 13-7 mark in games played against Manhattan in the Rose Hill Gym. The last Fordham win in the series came in 2008 as the Rams beat the Jaspers 62-49 at home.
Fordham enters the contest with a 3-2 mark, having defeated Cleveland State, Holy Cross and UCF. Most recently, the Rams erased an 18-point deficit before falling to TCU, 48-47, at the UCF Thanksgiving Tournament in Orlando.
The Rams will be led into the game by Abigail Corning and Christina Gaskin, who were named Atlantic 10 Co-Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Monday. Corning is having a breakout year as a sophomore, leading the team in scoring (16.6 ppg), netting double-figures in every game this season. Against UCF on Friday, a 70-57 Fordham win, Corning had a career day, scoring a career-high 29 points, on 11-of-15 shooting (73.3%), including 3-of-3 from behind the three-point line.
Gaskin, a freshman forward from Hockley, England, reached double-figures in scoring in both games of the UCF Thanksgiving Tournament, including a double-double performance of ten points and 12 rebounds against the hosts on Friday. She is averaging 8.2 ppg and 6.4 rpg on the year.
The Jaspers enter the game with a 2-3 mark. Most recently, they defeated NJIT, 75-66, on Sunday. The team has also defeated East Tennessee State while the three losses have come against Hartford, McNeese State and Army. Offensively, the Jaspers are led by Monica Roeder (16.6 PPG) and Lindsey Loutsenhizer (14.2 PPG).
Following the game with the Jaspers, the Rams return home to face the University of San Diego on Saturday, December 3 at 1:00 PM.
