Fordham's Krissy Buongiorno Named to the Atlantic 10 Volleyball All-Rookie Team

Nov. 17, 2011

Newport News, Va. - Fordham University's sophomore middle blocker Krissy Buongiorno (Ladera Ranch, Calif./Tesoro) was named to the 2011 Atlantic 10 Volleyball All-Rookie Team, it was announced on today by the league. Having missed her entire freshman season due to injury, Buongiorno is eligible for All-Rookie standing as this was her first year of competition.

Buongiorno is the fifth Fordham player to be named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team for volleyball, joining Christi Griffiths (2007), Kailee May (2007), Megan Arend (2008), and Mary Diamantidis (2010).

Buongiorno was among the Atlantic 10 leaders all season long in blocking, averaging 1.01 per set, which was good for seventh overall, before missing the final six matches of the season due to injury. She registered 91 total blocks (12 block solos, 79 block assists), which included eight matches of five blocks or more. In the Rams' single season records, her 1.01 blocks per set average ranks ninth all-time, while the 79 block assists are tenth.

Buongiorno was a big reason for the Rams' setting a new school record for blocks in a match with 21 at Temple, back on October 1st. She had a season-high 10 block assists in that match, and was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for her efforts.

Besides her blocking numbers, Buongiorno finished second on the team with 17 service aces, and third in hitting percentage (.210). She also totaled 119 kills and a 1.32 kills per set average.
