The Fordham University men's basketball team opens its 2011-12 season today in Syracuse as the Rams take on the fifth-ranked Syracuse University Orange at 4:00 PM in the Carrier Dome. Fordham enters the game after going 7-21 overall last year, 1-15 in the Atlantic 10. Syracuse enters the season off a 2010-11 campaign that saw the Orange compile a 27-8 overall record, 12-6 in the BIG EAST, as Syracuse advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
THE SYRACUSE SERIES: Saturday afternoon's contest will be the 43rd meeting between Fordham and Syracuse on the hardwood...The Orange lead the all-time series, which started in the 1927-28 season, 26-16...Syracuse has taken the past two meetings, including an 80-63 win in the Carrier Dome on November 16, 2007, in the last meeting between the two schools...The last Fordham win came on December 12,1981 when the Rams squeaked out a 79-78 win in the Rose Hill Gym...Syracuse has won 19 of the 24 games played in Syracuse while the Rams have won eleven of the 18 games played in the Rose Hill Gym...The longest winning streak was a seven game streak for Syracuse from 1972 through 1978 which was snapped by Fordham's win in 1982...The largest margin of victory for Syracuse was 47 (109-62 on February 20, 1978)...The largest margin of victory for Fordham was 23 (98-75 on December 19, 1970)...Fordham is 161-209 all-time against schools currently in the BIG EAST.
RAMS FACE HIGHEST RANKED TEAM SINCE 2004: When Fordham takes on fifth-ranked Syracuse on Saturday it will mark the highest-ranked opponent for the Rams since they played second-ranked Saint Joseph's on February 18, 2004, falling to the Hawks, 72-54. Fordham has played two top-ranked teams in its history, taking on number one Massachusetts twice in the 1995-96 season, falling to the Minutemen, 80-50, on January 31st in Amherst and, 73-47, in Madison Square Garden on February 6th. Fordham also faced top-ranked Michigan in 1976, dropping a 78-57 decision to the Wolverines in Ann Arbor.
GASTON CLIMBING CAREER REBOUND LIST: In just two years, sophomore forward Chris Gaston has already moved into the top 20 all-time rebounders in Fordham history with 635 career boards. The 635 rebounds put him in 14th place, 45 behind Dan O'Sullivan (1986-90) for 13th place.
Ed Conlin (1951-55) is Fordham's all-time rebounding leader with 1,930 career boards, almost 900 more than Dan Lyons (1951-55), who is in second place with 1,049.
GASTON CLOSING IN ON 1,000 CAREER POINTS: Junior Chris Gaston has amassed 950 career points over his first two years, good for 39th on the Fordham all-time list. He should become the 34th player to surpass the 1,000 point mark this year.
