The Fordham women's tennis team improved to 3-0 in dual matches this fall on Saturday, as the Rams topped Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island, 5-2, at the URI Tennis Complex in Kingston, Rhode Island.
Fordham opened the match with a clean sweep of the doubles action. Amy Simidian and Sarah Ali opened with an 8-2 first doubles win over Rhode Island's Kirsten and Tristany Leikman. Angelika Dabu and Julie Leong followed with an 8-6 win at third doubles over Nithila Asokaraj and Karolina Wojciak. Hanna Fritzinger and Bella Genkina wrapped up the doubles sweep with an 8-7 (11-9) win at second doubles over Pam Emery and Kathleen Uy.
In singles action, the Rams won first through fourth singles, all in straight sets. Simidian got things rolling with a 7-5, 6-1 win at first singles over Emery, while Ali defeated K. Leikem, 6-3, 6-2, at second singles. Dabu posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over T. Leikham at third singles with Genkina registering the final win at fourth singles, a 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory over Uy.
Leong almost made it five singles wins, after taking the first set, 6-1, from Rhode Island's Asokaraj. Leong however was forced to retire with an injury in the second set.
The Fordham women's tennis team has a quick turnaround for the team's next match, which will take place on Sunday, October 9th, when the squad hosts the Massachusetts Minutewomen at 1:00 PM on the Hawthorn/Rooney Tennis Courts.
