Women's Tennis Opens Home Season With Win Over Manhattan

Bronx, N.Y. - After two weeks of tournament play, the Fordham women's tennis team had their first dual match of the fall on Sunday, posting a 7-0 win over Manhattan College at the Hawthorn/Rooney Tennis Courts.

The Rams began the match by sweeping the doubles action and earning the doubles point. Fordham's Amy Simidian and Bella Genkina defeated Manhattan's Lili Johnson and Briana Turano, 8-6, at first doubles, while Sarah Ali and Hanna Fritzinger defeated Hilary Valenzuela and Caitlin Bricketto, 8-3, at second doubles. Angelika Dabu and Julie Leong closed out the doubles sweep for Fordham with an 8-0 win at third doubles over Christina Ton and Stephanie Tsao.

In singles action, Fordham swept all six singles matches, which included a three-set affair between Bethany Boyle and Alyssa Rosello at sixth singles. Rosello took the first set, 6-3, but Boyle rallied back to win the next two sets, 6-0 and 6-0 to earn the singles' win.

The other five matches were won by Fordham in straight sets, led by Simidian at first singles. Simidian defeated Johnson, 6-0 and 7-6 (8-6), while Ali topped Valenzuela, 6-1, 6-2, at second singles.

Dabu won at third singles over Bricketto, 6-1, 6-1, followed by a 6-4, 6-1 win by Fritzinger over Turano at fourth singles. Genkina rounded out the sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Ton at fifth singles.

The Fordham women's tennis team will next be in action on Wednesday, October 5th, when the Rams host NJIT at the Hawthorn/Rooney Tennis Courts, beginning at 3:30 PM.
