Complete Head of the Connecticut Regatta Results

Middletown, Conn. -

The Fordham University crew battled the elements on Sunday at the 2011 Head of the Connecticut Regatta as the high winds caused for rough water and the cancellation of some of the races while others were shortened. Despite the weather, the Fordham novice 8 took second in its race while the Rams placed fourth and sixth in the varsity 8.

For the second straight weekend, the Fordham novice 8 went up against a boat from UMass. After splitting two races last weekend, the UMass boat had the faster time on Sunday, covering the course in a time of 18:49.73 while the Rams placed second in 18:57.84, well ahead of Trinity (21:29.26) and Wesleyan (21:41.43).

With the course shortened due to rough water, the varsity races were about 1.5 miles (opposed to the normal three miles). The Fordham A boat took fourth in a time of 7:06.99, just about four seconds behind the winning boat from Wesleyan (7:02.93). Middlebury took second (7:02.61) with Trinity in third (7:03.11).

A second Trinity boat placed fifth (7:11.39) with the second Fordham varsity 8 clocking a 7:22.10 for sixth place, ahead of the second Wesleyan and Middlebury boats.

"It was a difficult day to be on the river due to the rough water which caused some boats to sink," said head coach Ted Bonanno. "The water was roughest at the beginning and since the novice 8 raced the entire course I think they were slowed by taking on water at the start. And the varsity race was very short which made for small time margins between boats."

The Fordham crew will return to action next Saturday and Sunday, October 22nd and 23rd, as they compete in the Head of the Charles in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
