It was a battle for first place in the CWPA Northern Division between Fordham (2-0) and 19th-ranked St. Francis (3-0) on Wednesday, as well as Fordham Senior Night at the Messmore Aquatic Center. In the end, St. Francis' Marko Gencic and Filip Sasic each scored four times to spoil Senior Night, as the Terriers doubled up the Fordham Rams, 16-8.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 6-15 on the year, 2-1 in the Northern Division, while St. Francis improved to 8-7 overall, 4-0 in the league.
The game began with the two teams exchanging tallies between the Terriers' Sasic and Fordham's Eric Minowitz over the first four minutes of play. Fordham goalkeeper Noah LeBeau then kept the score tied at one, coming up with a big penalty block with 1:58 left in the period. St. Francis though netted two goals in the final minute of the first quarter to take a 3-1 lead.
The Terriers then racked up six goals in the second quarter, including two by Vuk Vujosevic, to extend their lead to 9-3 by halftime.
St. Francis outscored the Rams 5-3 in the third quarter, while being even in the fourth at 2-2 for the 16-8 final score.
For Fordham, Robert Fleming had a team-high four goals and an assist, while Jake Bakas netted a pair of goals. Nicholas Allen had a goal, two assists, and two steals, with Minowitz having the final tally. In net, LeBeau and Christian Flessner each played two quarters. LeBeau finished with nine saves and two steals in the first two quarters, while Flessner made five stops to go with two steals in the second half.
The Fordham water polo team will next be in action on Saturday, October 15th, when the Rams take on Brown University at 3:30 PM. The game will be played at Harvard University.
