Newport News, Va. - Fordham University's sophomore middle blocker Krissy Buongiorno (Ladera Ranch, Calif./Tesoro) was selected as the Atlantic 10 Volleyball Rookie of the Week, it was announced on today. It is the first Atlantic 10 accolade of Buongiorno's career.

Having missed her entire freshman season due to injury, Buongiorno is eligible for Rookie awards as this is her first year of competition.

Buongiorno hit .326 over three matches this week, averaging 1.38 kills and 1.69 blocks per set. She registered five kills and five blocks on Tuesday at Rutgers, and followed with five kills and eight blocks against Saint Louis on Friday. Her best performance came on Saturday, registering eight kills, nine blocks, and two assists in a five-set match versus Duquesne.

Overall, Buongiorno is second in the Atlantic 10 in blocking at 1.12 blocks per set, and leads the Rams' hitters in hitting percentage and total blocks. She is also second on the squad in service aces with 11.

Buongiorno and the rest of Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Tuesday, October 11th, when the Rams play the Connecticut Huskies in Storrs, Connecticut, beginning at 7:00 PM.
