Men's Tennis Opens Spring Schedule at Cornell

Jan. 22, 2011

Cornell, N.Y. - Despite extremely cold temperatures outside, the Fordham men's tennis team still got their spring season underway inside Cornell's Reis Tennis Center on Saturday.

Cornell would use the indoor home court advantage to pull out a 7-0 decision over the Rams.

"This was a great experience to play a nationally ranked team and see the level where we want the program to be in a few years," said Fordham head coach Cory Hubbard. "Our guys played with good energy and had some chances in the doubles. Our goal is to be ready for A-10's in April and this was a good test and will help us down the road."

The match began with Cornell earning the doubles point, as the Big Red won all three doubles matches. Fordham's Nick Kelly and Eli Plangger kept the third doubles match with Spencer Clark and Brett Cromwell close before falling by an 8-6 count.

In singles action, Cornell got the better of Fordham in each match. Plangger played Cornell's Even McElwain at fifth singles, falling 6-4 and 6-2, while Fordham's Ken Fukumoto fell to Max Haskin by scores of, 6-2 and 6-2.

Clark defeated Fordham's Andriy Kulak at sixth singles, 6-2, 6-1, with the Rams' Austin Shoup falling to Zhongming Chen, 6-2 and 6-1.

The Fordham men's tennis team will next be in action on Sunday, February 13th, when they play at Quinnipiac, beginning at 3:00 PM.
