The Fordham University men's basketball Rams will continue their 2011 Atlantic 10 season on Wednesday night, January 19th, by hosting the Saint Louis University Billikens in the IZOD Center at 7:30 p.m. The contest between the two Jesuits schools is one of more than 90 games that will be played this season as part of the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight (JBS).
Once again, Fordham will be providing free tickets and transportation to the game for Fordham undergraduate students. Buses will depart Rose Hill at 5:30 p.m. and will return to Fordham 15 minutes after the conclusion of the game. The Rams enter the game with a 6-9 overall record, 0-3 in the Atlantic 10, after dropping an Atlantic 10 game at Charlotte, 72-52, on Saturday night. Saint Louis enters the game with a 6-11 overall, 1-3 in the conference, and is coming off a 67-51 home win over Saint Joseph's on Saturday.
Fordham will be guided into the game by first-year head coach Tom Pecora, who arrived at Rose Hill in March after nine successful seasons as the head coach at Hofstra where he averaged 20 wins during the past six years.
On the court, Fordham is led by sophomore Chris Gaston, a Union City, N.J. resident who played at St. Anthony High School and St. Benedict's High School, and senior Brenton Butler. Gaston has posted a double-double in nine of the 14 games this year and is averaging 14.5 ppg and 11.5 rpg, tops in the Atlantic 10 and third best in the nation, while Butler is leading the team and is ranked ninth in the Atlantic 10, averaging 15.7 ppg. Junior guard Alberto Estwick, a product of St. Anthony High School, is averaging 12.0 ppg.
THE SAINT LOUIS SERIES: Wednesday's game will be the seventh meeting between the Rams and the Billikens on the hardwood. Saint Louis leads the all-time series, 5-1, including a 75-48 win in Saint Louis last year.
RAMS AT THE IZOD CENTER: Wednesday night's game will be Fordham's 24th appearance at the IZOD Center (the arena was formerly known as the Brendan Byrne Arena and the Continental Airlines Arena). The Rams are 11-12 all-time in the building, including a 70-51 loss to Temple on January 5th.
RAMS VERSUS FELLOW JESUITS: The Fordham University Rams are currently 184-186 (.490) all-time against other Jesuit schools: 42-41 vs. Holy Cross; 31-11 vs. Fairfield; 31-15 vs. Saint Peter's; 27-23 vs. Georgetown; 15-27 vs. Saint Joseph's; 12-8 vs. Canisius; 10-19 vs. Boston College; 6-2 vs. Loyola (Md.); 3-1 vs. Detroit; 3-20 vs. Xavier; 1-11 vs. Marquette; 1-5 vs. Saint Louis; 1-1 vs. San Francisco and 1-2 vs. Santa Clara. The Rams are currently on a 16-game losing streak against Jesuit schools dating back to 2007. The last Fordham win over a fellow Jesuit was a 77-68 win over Saint Louis on January 20, 2007.
